Noroviruses occur worldwide and usually cause gastrointestinal diseases. The pathogens are excreted en masse by ill persons in their stool and vomit and are highly contagious. Therefore, major outbreaks of vomiting diarrhea often occur in community settings such as kindergartens, schools, nursing homes, or hospitals. Most illnesses occur from October to March.
Rotavirus is the most common cause of diarrheal disease in children worldwide. It is accompanied by severe diarrhea, vomiting and fever. Rotavirus can be very dangerous, especially for young children, but deaths are rare in Germany.
Adenoviruses are a group of pathogens that cause a variety of diseases, including those of the gastrointestinal tract. The viruses are highly contagious and resistant.
Human astroviruses have been described as causative agents of gastroenteritis primarily in children, but also in adults worldwide. Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain.
